The benefits of mulch
Mulch is made up of organic material such as shredded or chipped tree bark. A 3-inch layer of mulch spread over bare soil will enhance the health of your garden.
Mulch helps conserve water by reducing evaporation, allowing water to be held in the soil for longer. It also helps build soil structure, inhibits weed growth and much more. Mulch is applied as a layer on top of the soil and never mixed into the soil.
- Before applying mulch, remove weeds and water the ground thoroughly.
- Apply a 3- to 4-inch layer to conserve water and promote a healthy soil.
- Keep mulch between 6 and 12 inches from the base of trees and shrubs.
