Request a water variance

Monthly water usage budgets are based on property type, number of residents in the home, and outdoor landscape area. Eligible customers can apply for a variance.

How to apply for a variance

Households with more than the base number of residents per household, medical needs, livestock, or irrigated landscape areas larger than the default square footage can apply for a water variance to increase their allotted monthly use of water. Requesting a water variance may help you more efficiently use water in the Low Volume or Base rates, lowering your monthly water bill.

If you are an apartment manager requesting a variance for multiple accounts under one property name, fill out the Multi-family Property Variance Request for Increased Water Budget form and email it to WaterEfficiency@IRWD.com.

Reasons For Variance Request

All variances require attaching supporting documents. Attached files must be 7 megabytes or less. Files may be attached in compressed archives.

Total number in household

Please attach proof of permanent residency for each person in the household that includes the current service address. Acceptable documents include children’s birth certificates, school records, blank checks with preprinted names and addresses, income tax returns, driver's licenses, or lease agreements. For more than eight household members, email verifications along with your account number to customerservice@IRWD.com.

Total number of square feet:

Soft landscape only

Submit landscape drawings or sketches showing the total square feet of the irrigated landscape. Include the surface area of your pool and spa. Do not include the hardscape area (e.g., driveways or patios) as part of the total landscape. Record the dimensions of the total area in square feet.
